Eco Driving Tips for Reducing Fuel Costs in CarsThere are so many ways to reduce the fuel consumption of a car, and anybody can do it. Whether the car is automatic or manual stick shift simply by accelerating gently and braking gently less fuel will be used when driving. The use of the air conditioning in the vehicle will use on average 10-15% more fuel, and while it is a useful tool in the car, it is of most benefit after 40miles or 66klms per hour. Using the air conditioning under 40miles/66klms per hour will burn more fuel than having the window open while driving. The same can be said for having the car window/s open driving over 40miles/66klms per hour. This will use more fuel than the air conditioner.

Carrying excess loads on board will add to extra fuel being used when driving. This could be luggage in the boot of the car. It could be an empty roof box on the roof rails. It can be dirt on the car, so by simply keeping the car clean both inside and out it will reduce the weight in the vehicle. Every passenger in the car will add extra costs to fuel. So pooling your journeys to schools or to work can greatly reduce the costs for everyone.

After filling the car with fuel and making sure the filler cap is tights can save you up to 2% on the fuel costs. Simply by stopping the fuel vapour from escaping from the fuel tank will reduce fuel costs.
Checking the tyre pressure regularly will help to reduce the fuel costs. Properly inflated tyres will stop the drag on the road.

A clean well serviced engine will also reduce the fuel costs of the car. An engine that is clean and is running well will burn fuel more efficiently.

Using the secondary controls correctly will help to reduce the cost of fuel. By not leaving on the fan/ventilation system in the car, using the rear demister only when needed. Use the correct lights during the day for visibility. Turn the radio off for periods. This will help your concentration and reduce your fuel costs. By not charging phones or laptops i-pods, mp4s or dvd’s in the car will reduce the running costs.

All of these methods of saving fuel can be done simply by being more aware of the benefits of eco driving. The introduction of EV’s (electric vehicles) while welcome will take many years to perfect and is still very costly and not freely available to everybody. Many new cars are using hybrid technology to increase the effectiveness of EV’s but again these are expensive. By using common sense and changing our driving habits it is possible to save fuel today.
